Insulated Concrete Forms

Insulated Concrete Forms ( or ICF’s) offer many benefits that other building methods do not. ICF’s consist of two layers of rigid foam spaced apart by a plastic web. These interlocking, lightweight blocks stack upon one another like Lego blocks forming a hollow wall cavity in which to pour the reinforced concrete. The outer layers of Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) insulate a home in the way a foam coffee cup keeps coffee warm and your hand cool. Consider some reasons why ICF’s may be the right choice for you:

Comfort & Energy Efficiency

The thermal mass of concrete combined with the double layer of EPS not only prevents drafts and cold spots but also reduces the temperature spikes that conventional structures experience during the summer and winter months. Higher R values prevent heat loss resulting in an estimated twenty five to fifty percent savings to heat and cool the home. Consequently, heating and cooling systems can be reduced. While the initial construction costs are greater than conventional construction methods, the return on investment is usually within three to five years.

Safety

ICF’s contain no harmful chemicals or formaldehydes that are often found in conventional building materials. Insulated Concrete Forms do not off-gas, grow mold or mildew, or allow for the penetration of allergens, dust, bugs, termites, or rodents. With a two hour fire rating and a high wind resistance, these structures can withstand severe conditions and storms that would destroy a conventional structure.

Quiet

Many home owners choose ICF’s when building near trains, airports, or other areas experiencing more pronounced noise because they are three times quieter than conventional methods.

Ease of Construction

An obvious advantage of ICF’s is the way that they are constructed. They simply stack upon each other with the plastic ribs holding the rebar in place. The forms come in a variety of shapes making it easy to form different angles, corners and even curved walls. The plastic ribs occur every 16″ on center allowing for virtually any interior or exterior cladding system.
